A visitor walks through a path of smoldering embers during the "Hiwatari-matsuri" in Takao-san Yakuo-in Yuki-ji Temple, Hachioji-shi, Tokyo. Shugendo's followers also called "Yamabushi" perform to receive protection from misfortune, and for good health and to pray for peace in the world. Visitors can participate at the end of the ceremony to receive the benefits. Shugendo is a unique Japanese religion that mixes Buddhism and ancient mountain worship.
