November 1, 2011, Tokyo, Japan - Strapping the computerized metallic brace onto his right leg, Eiichi Saito, a professor in rehabilitation medicine, demonstrates the "walk assist" device he has co-developed with Toyota at its facility in Tokyo on Tuesday, November 1, 2011, as the auto maker unveiled experimental robots aimed for commercialization from 2013 to the media. Prof. Saito, whose right leg was paralyzed by polio, walked up and down a flight of stairs and showed how the brace could bend at knee as needed, allowing him to walk more naturally. Toyota also demonstrated an intelligent machine with padded arms that can help health care workers lift disabled patients from their beds and then carry them around. Another mobility aid worked like a skateboard to help people relearn balance. (Photo by Natsuki Sakai/AFLO) [3615] -mis- « less
