August 30, 2011, Okumamachi, Japan - Dust samples are collected at the opening of the Unit 2 reactor building at Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant in Okumamachi, Fukushima Prefecture, some 210km northeast of Tokyo, on Monday, August 29, 2011. Recent test results made available by Japans Ministry of Science and Education showed higher-than-expected levels of radiation in many areas of Fukushima Prefecture evacuated following the reactor accident. Radiation levels above safe limits were found at more than three dozen sites within the 20-kilometer radius where the evacuation remains in effect. Radiation measured at some locations would create doses in excess of 500 millisieverts per year. An estimated 80,000 people were evacuated after the accident and now it is feared that many evacuated areas may be uninhabitable for years. The photo was released by Tokyo Electric Power Co., the operator of the crippled plant on August 30. (Photo by TEPCO/AFLO) [0006] -mis-
